Research Proposal: TV and how Bad it is on Children

JUNE 20TH

Studies have shown that in the past few years, a major number of American children spent more time in front of a television set than in a classroom. Many of them were free to watch without a regulation from their parents: in fact nearly a quarter had sets in their own rooms. So what does television do to our children? Is it good or bad for children? Then how? Theses are some questions that would give a little information on TV and it effect on children. Television is one of the most significant inventions in the world it was invented by Philo Farnsworth an American inventor. However, it become as any other inventions can be use in either way the good way or the bad way. Children should be protected from watching TV programs which is include violence scenes , sex scenes, drug use and Commercials because it has a bad influence on children mentally and physically.

Do you know the average American kid set to watch TV everyday? Latest studies show that American kids spend 5 hours a day watching TV. Some of them watch TV with their parents and others watch without a parent control. Watching TV without a parent control is very dangers on children because they would be watching things that they shouldn’t watch. TV violence is one of the most dangers things to watch for children. It main influence on children is on their behavior and it effect children to make them become numb the horror of violence, accepted violence as a way to solve problems, imitate the violence that they observe on TV and make them more aggressive on violence. It doesn’t matter the age of the child, the effect is the same. 5 years old kid watching his favorite character on TV killing people, how do you think that affect him? I think it will make him think that violence is the only way to get what you want. How can we prevent violence? We can stop it by teaching our children to use word rather than actions to solve and also by reducing the violence that they witness. FACT: The average American child will have watched 100,000 acts of televised violence, including 8000 depictions of murder, by the time he or she finishes sixth grade (approximately 13 years old).

The number of scenes on US TV featuring sex has nearly doubled in the last seven years according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. A number of studies have shown the dramatic effect that television and music have on young people's attitudes and beliefs. Broadcast television and popular music have become far more explicit in recent years, with the 8 p.m. hour of prime time viewing (the "family hour") containing an average of more than eight sexual incidents. A study called Sex on TV, released in 2001 by the Kaiser Family Foundation, found that the number of programs with sexual content increased from about 50% of all shows in the 1997/98 television season to 66% in the 1999/2000 season.

Families have to take care of their children by control what they watch on TV. However, it’s not the only families responsibility, it also the media too or people who control or choose what appear on TV and what shouldn’t. 56% of children ages 8-16 have a television in their rooms (Annenberg Public Policy Center, 2000. Media in the Home 2000) this is a huge number that would make people recognize how dangers are TV on children 57% of children in United States has television in their rooms. So they watch TV alone with doors looked and that mean they watch anything they want.

According to MELISSA DITTMANN, “advertising industry spends $12 billion per year on ads targeted to children, bombarding young audiences with persuasive messages through media such as television and the Internet”. The average child is exposed to more than 40,000 TV commercials a year, according to studies. And ads are reaching children through new media technologies and even in schools--with corporate-sponsored educational materials and product placements in students' textbooks. So how that effect children? The immediate effect is the child would have the desire to have that product, no matter what that product stand for. Some other influenced the child behavior like if a kid see an ad about healthy food and then he viewed another ad about snack or junk food the first ad wouldn’t be effective any more. Indeed, some researchers speculate that advertising geared to children--who largely consist of ads for sugary cereals, candy and fast-food restaurants--may be contributing to the increase in childhood obesity by promoting unhealthy foods. Plus, studies suggest that eating habits formed during childhood can persist throughout life. Actually it’s one of the most important reasons of child obesity. Children can’t stand watching theses thing on TV and they immediately start to ask their parents to buy theses things regardless what that thing stand for and the kid use others techniques like refuse to eat anything than the product that his convinced the kid . The companies who put theses ads on the TV know that children are an easy target to get their attention. Also adult Commercials have a bad influence on children imagine that a tiny percentage among the 40,000 Commercials per year are selling unhealthy stuff like beer. They introduce beer as a cool thing and it make people cool, so the children get that beer equal cool and if you want to be cool you have to drink beer.

The next step of my research will be reading some books that have something with my research. I already have a list of the books that I’m going to read beside books that I already took a like it them. Also I’ll interview some people who have an experience with children and television and I’ll ask them some questions such as how TV affects your life? Is TV harm on children? And others. I may also talk to psychologist who has an experience with children got effected by TV and about that I have done some research to find a psychologist specialist in children and a sent some emails to some of psychologist furthermore I’m waiting for a response. In addition I’ll search for victims of TV violence and see how TV made them victims. Moreover I will use some databases including Kluwer Online, LexisNexis Academic (Thomson Gale), and Academic Search Premier (Ebsco). so far I have write down a plan for my research process, first for the next couple days I will read some books and read other stuff like from the internet, so I would be knowing a little more information because the next thing will be interviewing some people and I have to be ready to ask them, so hopefully by the next week I’ll be finished from talking to people who I’m going to interview. After that I’ll narrow me thinking little bet , so I could focus more within a specific thing .I think all that will give me a full idea on what I’m going to do, so after that I will start writing my research with confident that I’m ready to do so.

In fact I’m doing this research because I think what I’m seeing on TV now days is a crime on childhood of any child and we have to do anything that can help as people because the same thing could happen to my children in the future and I know that most people have no idea about how that could effect children through out their life. So I felt like I have to do something, so I decided to go deep in the subject and whenever I read something on my subject I feel like that what should I write about. My main goal is to persuade families who have children and they don’t know how bad TV is, so they can take care of their children to reduce the harm of television and also for families who know, but they don’t take as a series thing. Protect children everywhere is what me focusing on and hoping that my research would be a reason to protect at least one child from TV.

In conclusion TV has not just become a TV where children enjoyed watching for fun it becomes a thing where children learn from new things. It’s not a bad idea to learn from TV. However, the problem is that we can’t decide or control what should children to watch and what’s not. TV has a bad effect on children specially programs that content violence, sex, drug scenes, and commercials.
